 WIG QUESTIONS

HOW TO WEAR MY WIG UNDERNEATH?

So you’re thinking about buying a wig, but you’re worried about how to wear your own hair underneath. It’s a very valid question – how do I prevent my own hair from being obvious?
There are many different ways to prepare the hair. We want you to get the most out of your wig and to feel comfortable with your new look.
The methods listed below are for all types of hair. It’s best to experiment with different methods and see which ones work best for you.

We advise you to use a wig cap, we also giveaway wig caps as a gift in your package. A wig cap helps to keep your hair in place and create a smoother base for your wig to sit. You can edge out edge out the wig cap to sit on your hairline and brush any baby hairs inwards with some hair gel. If you decide to glue or wig, your baby hairs and hairline will be protected.

Braids/ plaits

Braiding/ plaiting method:-

1. Section the hair in two, down the centre from hairline to nape of the neck.
2. Comb the hair away from the face, keeping the hair as flat as possible to the scalp and then get sections of hair and braid/plait.
3. Repeat this on the other side.
4. With each of the braids/plaits, take one and attach it to the head along the nape of the neck around the circumference/ crown of the head, securing with bobby pins as you go. Keeping the hair as flat as possible.
5. Repeat on the other side.
6. Place a wig cap over your prepared hair ready to put on your wig.

This method works best for longer hair.

If you have any questions or would like to share your own methods, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

HOW TO SECURE YOUR WIG & PREVENT HEADACHES

Headaches can arise from wig straps being fixed too tightly around the circumference of your head. Causing too much pressure that can cause headaches.
To find the correct measurements of your own head. Use a dressmakers (cloth) tape to measure your head.
Take your cloth tape and measure from the front hairline to just above the ears, to the nape of the neck, and back around to the front hairline – this will measure your heads circumference. ( See our measuring guide for more information).

How to make a wig more secure.

Glues

A wig glue is applied to the hairline to ensure your wig stays in place, some come waterproof as well, which can provide extra security and confidence if you’re out and you get caught in the rain. Glues come in all different strengths and a wig glue remover is advised to ensure you remove all traces of glue from your head and the wig.

Our wigs are perfect for wearing with no glue, as they are very secure around the hairline (with correct measurements). If you decide to glue the edges we recommend you use an everyday glue like Got2be glue spray, it comes off easily with no damages.

Wig Grip Headbands

These headbands come as silicone or velvety fabrics. Velvety fabric bands come with velcro fastening to secure the band to fit your head accordingly. These are kinder to heads that may experience pressure, as Its purpose is to secure your wig and distribute its weight and pressure evenly, keeping your wig in place.

The silicone variety is just a band that stretches to fit the circumference of your head. Be warned as some can be quite tight as they come as a band. A brand called “The Wig Fix” has received excellent reviews online. Materials suit different individuals, what’s best comes down to personal preference.

HOW TO PUT ON YOUR WIG & TRIMMING YOUR LACE?

For lace front wigs, you will have to trim the lace. This only needs to be done the first time you use your wig.

To trim the lace, put the wig on your head. Our Lace fronts come with an adjustable strap, elastic band and a grip comb at the back of the wig. All need to be used to have a secure fit on your lace frontal unit.

Clip the wig hair gently back, so you can see the hairline clearly. We advise to trim the lace, as you are wearing the wig, because you want to follow and mimic your own natural hairline.

With small scissors (nail scissors are ideal) cut small amounts of lace at a time to avoid accidentally cutting too much. Leave a little bit of lace along the wig hairline, for extra support if using glue. If you have natural baby hairs along your hairline, with a tail comb run the tail end just under the edge, and pull some hairs out from under the wig. Or an eyebrow brush can be used to brush out baby hairs. This will create a more natural look.

If using glues, tapes or wig grip bands, press the edges of the wig securely down.
When you feel comfortable about the position and security of your wig:- style, accessorise, as you please, and you’re good to go.

HOW TO STYLE, BRUSH OR COMB YOUR WIG?

When your wig has been out all day or night, it will require a brush just to remove any knots and tangles, and keep it in good shape.

Always detangle a wig first.
When detangling, always start from the ends and work your way up towards the roots, gentle as you go, to avoid tugging or breakage.

For curly styles a wide tooth comb is recommended or simply using your fingers, as brushing will brush out the shape of the curls into fluffy waves.
If you have to brush the curls, you can manipulate those curls with your fingers to separate them or twist around your fingers so they fall into the curly shape they were.

Wide Tooth Comb
A large wide tooth comb is good for all kinds of styles to keep you looking groomed, always starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top. Being gentle and careful not to tug at the hair to avoid breakage.

Styling

We recommend when styling your wig using any heat, always use a heat protectant spray or serum to avoid heat damage.

Good Quality Virgin Hair does not require heat styling each wear, as the hair is very good at maintaining it's curls or remaining straight. It is always best to take your wig off at night time or bath time to avoid tangling. (See storage FAQ)

If however, your wig is glued on we do recommend you always wear a silk bonnet, head wrap to protect your hair and for inches to braid your hair into a ponytail to avoid tangling and constantly brushing.

 HOW TO WASH YOUR WIG?

Step 1: Prepping

To wash your wig, you will need some tools and products such as, a wig stand (optional), wide tooth combs, shampoo, conditioner and towels.

Make sure to purchase only hair care products specifically designed for lace frontal wig. Do not buy regular drugstore hair products.

Prep the hair by removing any adhesive residue in the lace. Using a wig adhesive remover and brush, gently brush off glue remains from the lace frontal. Do not peel off the adhesive residue forcefully to avoid tearing the lace frontal.

Before washing, gently brush through the wig with a wide tooth comb or your fingers to remove knots and tangles. It is best to begin at the tip and work your way to the root of the hair. Do not snag the hair roughly to avoid shedding the hair.

Step 2: Shampoo

First, rinse the hair gently under running water. The water should be slightly warm or at room temperature.

Apply just enough shampoo to the hair starting from the tip and avoiding the root and the lace section of the wig.

Gently dab the lace frontal and the inside of the cap with some of the soapy water. Do not scrub the lace frontal.

For the best results, use a shampoo most suitable for the wig texture, maybe curly, kinky or straight hair shampoo to retain the hair texture. And, for colour-treated hair, mild shampoos should be used to maintain the hair colour. Do not scrub or rub the hair because doing that can damage the hair strands.

Step 3: Rinsing

Under cool running water, rinse the wig from the top down until all the shampoo is gone.

Using a towel, gently blot the wig before applying conditioner. Do not wring the hair to remove excess water.

The hair should still be damp but it should not be sopping wet.

Step 4: Conditioner

Apply conditioner to the damp hair in sections by using your hands to gently work the wig conditioner into the sections of hair. Ensure even application to make sure every strand of hair is coated with the conditioner.

Avoid the base of the wig when applying conditioner because it can loosen the knots on the frontal and cause hair loss.

Leave the conditioner to sit in the hair for at least five minutes.

While the hair is saturated with the wig conditioner, gently detangle the wig using your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Beginning from the tip, comb the damp hair in small sections and work your way to the base of the wig. Do not force the tangles out of the hair, gently separate the knots and tangles to avoid shedding especially around the frontal.

Rinse the conditioned hair thoroughly under cool running water.

Squeeze the hair very gently to remove the excess water. Do not wring or twist the hair to avoid hair tangling and breakage.

Step 5: Drying

Gently blot the hair with a towel. Do not brush the hair while it is wet to avoid damaging the hair fibres.

Place the hair on a wig stand and allow it to air dry. Keep the hair out of direct sunlight.

Avoid making use of a blow dryer while the hair is wet. Once the hair is completely dry, you can move on to styling the hair.

Maintaining a lace frontal wig does not have to be tedious or tiring, all you have to do is understand how to properly wash your wig. Also, ensure that when you are not wearing your wig, it should be on a wig stand to keep it from been tangled and to help the wig maintain its structure.

Avoid causing damage to the lace frontal wig by using hot water, chlorine and other liquids that may damage the hair fibres.

To get the best of your lace frontal wig, ensure it is washed properly and with the most suitable products and tools. You must also ensure to be really careful and gentle with the hair when washing, conditioning and drying it to get your lace frontal wig to look it's best.
